X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a powerful analytical method used in a wide variety of industries to determine the elemental composition of various materials. One use of XRF that has gained substantial interest is its ability to accurately, nondestructively and rapidly detect precious metals content in many kinds of materials such jewelry, bullion, nugget, ingot and scrap as well as in liquids. An XRF test is much fast than fire assay work and more accurate than other options.

The EDX3000 is a benchtop XRF spectrometer providing a complete solution for full precious metals analysis for jewellers, precious metal refiners and recyclers, banks, etc. Some popular desktop instruments for precious metal analysis require Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) to cool their detection systems. However, LN2 is a hassle for the user as well as an added expense. Because of that, Skyray XRF has developed our gold tester and precious metal analyzers so that they do not require LN2 but still provide excellent performance.

The EDX3000 system incorporates a high energy resolution Si-PIN detector which allows it to properly separate peaks of all precious metals and provide accurate information on the content of each as required, so it’s able to detect both full precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, W, Os, Ir, etc.) and base metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, etc.) simultaneously.

Furthermore, the software package for EDX3000 has been developed specifically for full precious metal analysis; providing easy navigation and report generation as required by users that don’t have a technical background. It is everything that refiners, jewellers, and serious buy-back organizations engaged in full precious metal property need. The user-friendly software highlights all the information a user requires on one screen including measurement time, a screenshot of the sample, critical instrument data, in-process results, etc. The EDX3000 can identify gold karat rating in as little as 10 seconds and provide a complete elemental composition in 60–300 seconds.

For these reasons the EDX3000 is particularly suited to refiners or serious buy-back organisations. Those who are buying back jewellery primarily for the gold content will typically consider the more specialised EDX600 because of its low cost. The accuracy, pricing and software of EDX3000 set it apart from all other nondestructive precious metal analysers as well as from destructive chemical test methods.

Another application for EDX3000 is the plating and plating bath for monitoring plating thickness. The inclusion of a high energy resolution Si-PIN detector and matching thickness analysis software allows it to measure multiple metal coating layers of complicated elemental compositions.
